Jeffris Family Foundation Awards Challenge Grant to Peter Dougherty Society

The historic 1842 Dougherty “Mission” house’s restoration can significantly move forward thanks to the 2 for 1 Challenge Grant provided by the Jeffris Family Foundation and the donations of many individuals and other foundations. The Peter Dougherty Society received the Grant in June 2013 and was able to meet its requirements by the deadline in December 2015. The Jeffris Family Foundation of Janesville, Wisconsin, has as its mission to preserve the cultural history and heritage of the Midwest through the preservation of regionally and nationally important historic buildings. Tom Jeffris, President, said “The Peter Dougherty Society did an outstanding job on fundraising and was a pleasure to work with.”
The Historic Mission House located at 18459 Mission Road, Traverse City, was built in 1842 by the Reverend Peter Dougherty, a Presbyterian minister, and local Native Americans. It was the first post and beam home in the northwest corner of Lower Michigan. This house was the focus for religious observances, schooling, farming, trading and medical care for the Native Americans residing on the northern tip of what is now the Old Mission Peninsula. In 2011, it became listed on the National Register of Historical Places with State level of significance by the National Park Service.
The Peter Dougherty Society is a non-profit organization focusing on the restoration and administration of the Dougherty Mission House. In 2006, the house, its historical artifacts, and the surrounding 16 acres were purchased with donated funds from individuals and foundations and assigned to Peninsula Township with a conservation easement with the Michigan Historical Preservation Network.
The Jeffris Foundation Funds will be used for the restoration of the Dougherty Mission House. Maintaining historic authenticity remains a priority while updating to today’s building standards.
When completed, the Mission House will house a museum and a historical center to provide opportunities to share our region’s early history. The targeted opening is Fall of 2017.
