Settlement on Old Mission Peninsula is a video by representatives of original settlers on Old Mission Peninsula, telling of the trials and triumphs of their ancestors. Human settlement on the Peninsula began with Native Americans, and Europeans came later. French voyageurs, trappers and traders, were first among them, moving as travelers among the Native Americans. Settlers came in the 1800’s, and the Peter Dougherty Mission House was the first frame house in Northwest Lower Michigan. Farmers came in to settle the land as the numerous treaties between the United States and the Anishnaebek natives opened the land for Europeans. This video gives a taste of life in that era.
